Tuesday September 18th

On Tuesday September 18th I arrived at Edmonton airport with my friend Tara. Karen picked us up in the dog truck and Kara was also there to greet us. What a nice surprise!
We went out for lunch and then Karen drove us to her house and NorthWapiti kennels.  Tara and I unpacked into the cozy little cabin then went out to meet all the dogs.  It was great to see the dogs I've read about so often and all the yearlings that joined the yard since my last visit in May 2005.  There were quite a few yearlings I was really taken with, Paxson, X, Charge, Watt, Flash, Irving, Bingo, Bongo, Runner, Comet, Trigger, Shooter and Banshee.  It was great to see Runner, Nitro and Togo again!!  Nitro reminds me so much of his dad Dodge.  Runner is one of my favorite Lincoln pups!  We are so proud to see him performing so well in Karen's kennel.  Togo was so excited to see me, he was just beside himself! Every time he saw me for the first few days he would scream and carry on.  It was nice he was so excited to see me again.  After visiting the yard we went to eat dinner.  What a great cook Karen is!  :)  After dinner we went to free run the Cree puppies.  Tara and I rode with Karen on her ATV and when Karen says hold on you better listen!  The Cree puppies did a 1.5 mile loop with us tagging along behind them.  Those pups are just AMAZING to free run! We clocked them at over 22 MPH.  They ran in front of the ATV the entire time. It sure was cool to see Skor x Kluane's pups free run so well!  I was a proud mom.:)

The amazing Cree pups.  Younger littermates to our Swift!

When we got back we fed dogs and I was ready for bed after a long day of traveling.  Karen showed Tara and I how to use the heater and we heated up the cabin and went to bed.  I quickly fell asleep when Tara woke me up saying "There is a mouse in the heater!"  I could smell the mouse hair burning as it frantically tried to escape the flames of the heater.  Eww!!!!

Wednesday September 19th

Weds am I awoke with a cold, ack!  What a way to start a vacation.  I knew Tuesday night I was coming down with something but after a hot shower I was feeling a little better.  After we ate breakfast, Karen made up a team to run. \

Tara and I would take turns riding with Karen while the other one drove the other ATV.  Karen had a few girls in season (Roary, Spidey, Sprite, Jinx and Banshee) which made for some interesting training but everything went fairly well and there were no accidental litters!  We did 10 miles, the dogs did great!  I was very impressed with Irving, that boy can work!  It was also great to see Myst's sire Herman in harness.  He is such a hard working dog and he just eats hills.  Karen showed us the trail that crosses a river and leads to a camping area.  The trail down to the river has some sharp turns and steep down hills.  Sure made for a white knuckle ride!  Especially behind a strong team of dogs.  The trail was beautiful. The leaves were now gold, yellow or orange.  So pretty!  We finished up our run with soup for the dogs which they devoured in seconds.  We free- ran all 3 litters that night.  The Hillbillies caught on quickly and did well.  The Black litter was a different story.  They thought it was fun to always have one of them right in front of the 4-wheeler so we couldn't take off ahead of them.  Once we finally got ahead of them Beauty was a star!  That night we played Yahtzee to see who would do dishes.  Karen kicked our butts with an almost perfect Yahtzee score.  I was the loser so I did dishes and Tara was nice enough to help:)  Tara and I already decided before we played Yahtzee we were going to do dishes not matter what.  Karen was cooking dinner every night so it was only fair that we cleaned up.

I had some trouble getting Mark's ATV started but once we got going things went well.  Karen and Tara took off first and I followed with my own 12 dog team.  So cool!!  We did a 13 mile run down to the graveyard and back.  We did a lot of hills, winding through the woods and running along the highway in the ditches.  We did some great passes by some cows!  I was very impressed, the dogs didn't even blink twice.  It was great to see Runner & Nitro perform in harness.  Runner is just AMAZING!!  Nitro was great too.  Dasher and Jinx are great leaders, Dasher is just incredible.  I would of taken her home in a heartbeat.  Other dogs who really impressed me were Holly, Paxson, Loki & Odie.  Sure makes me happy I have an Odie son.  Sometimes there are dogs you see and you have a feeling of "I just have to have that dog."  I totally fell in love with Paxson during my trip and I offered to take him home but Karen said no.  I was bummed but I'm still hoping maybe someday he will still come to NH!;) He was my favorite "Copper Basin" pup when I saw them at 8 wks two years ago.  :)  After the dogs had their soup Karen and I both took our teams around the fast loop.  The dogs always really enjoy it!
